Swansea City are closing in on appointing Vítor Matos as their next head coach following the sacking of Alan Sheehan.

The Irishman had delivered what the Championship club described as “two highly impressive stints in interim charge” before being appointed permanently in the latter stages of the 2024–25 season, following Luke Williams’ departure.

However, Sheehan managed just four league wins from Swansea’s opening 15 matches this season.

Swansea City have been in talks to appoint Maritimo’s Vítor Matos as their new head coach after missing out on their top target, Kim Hellberg.

Maritimo issued a statement on Thursday, confirming that their head coach will only be allowed to leave if an interested club activates his release clause.

“The board of Maritimo, Madeira can confirm that Vitor Matos will continue at the club, despite interest from other institutions,” said a statement on the Portuguese second-tier club’s website.

“President Carlos Andre Gomes recognises the external attention generated by the quality of the manager’s work but assures that the club’s rights are protected.

“The club considers it natural for there to be interest in Vitor Matos, and highlights the excellence of his work and his own satisfaction with the project.

“The club reiterates that an exit can only occur pending the full payment of the release clause of one million euros, without exception or alternate negotiation.”

According to Sky Sports News, Swansea City have triggered the £878,000 release clause to appoint Maritimo head coach Vítor Matos.

The former Liverpool coach is understood to be close to finalising terms to become the Welsh club’s new manager.

Matos is currently preparing Maritimo for their clash with Penafiel on Sunday.

If all goes to plan, he is expected to travel to the UK next week to complete the move.

In the meantime, Darren O’Dea will take interim charge of Swansea for their game against Bristol City tomorrow.
