Why the Celtics are playing on green court Friday vs. Nets

The Celtics usual parquet court at TD Garden will be getting a green makeover for the third straight season during NBA Cup games starting Friday night against the Hawks.

The Celtics will be hosting their first NBA Cup game of the season against the Nets Friday night. All 30 NBA teams have different courts for the third straight season to promote awareness of the in-season tournament. Boston will use a court with a lighter shade of green this year with an NBA Cup logo in the middle of the floor.

Boston has split their first two NBA Cup road games, beating the Philadelphia 76ers 109-108 on Halloween night and losing to the Magic 123-110 on Nov. 7 in Orlando.

Boston will host the Nets on Friday and the Pistons on Wednesday night to round out East Group B play. Boston currently sits in third place in their Group behind the Magic (2-0) and Pistons (2-0).

The Celtics won their group two years ago but failed to advance out of group play last season. To advance out of Group C this year, the Celtics will need to win their final two games in group play and likely do so with a large scoring margin. They currently hold just a -12 point differential in the past two games.

Here’s the full Celtics schedule and results for NBA Cup pool play so far.

**October 31:** 109-108 win @ Philadelphia

**November 7:** 123-110 loss @ Orlando

**November 21:** vs. Brooklyn, 7:30 p.m.

**November 26:** vs. Detroit, 5 p.m.

Each team will play every other team within their group, (consisting of five total teams) during the group stage. The winners of each group and one wildcard team from each conference will advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament in the second week of December.

The semifinals and championship of the NBA Cup will be held at T-Mobile Arena for the third straight year. The winners of the NBA Cup will get the trophy and $500,000 for each player. Losing in the championship game is a $200,000 bonus. There are also winnings for making it to the semifinals ($100,000) and quarterfinals ($50,000). The Bucks won the NBA Cup last year.
