Police Release Disturbing New Details on Marshawn Kneeland’s Death

New and troubling information has emerged in the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland, the 24-year-old Dallas Cowboys defensive end, after a police chase. According to newly released records from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Kneeland was driving at more than 145 miles per hour shortly before his vehicle crashed and he later died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

DPS officials revealed that troopers first spotted Kneeland’s black Dodge Charger around 10:30 p.m. on November 5, near the Dallas North Tollway and Frankford Road. As the chase unfolded, authorities claim he made several unsafe lane changes while passing other vehicles. At its peak, the vehicle’s speed reportedly exceeded 145 mph.

Shortly afterward, Kneeland’s car crashed into a pickup truck on Dallas Parkway, near Warren Parkway. After the crash, he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.

Harrowing Search and Final Moments

Following the crash, a multi-agency search — including drones, K-9 units, and troopers — was launched to find Kneeland. (Heavy Sports) Police dispatch audio later revealed that authorities tracked a heat signature from a portable restroom, where Kneeland was eventually found.

According to the audio, responders described “blood coming out” as they approached. Moments later, they discovered that Kneeland had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Newly released dispatch recordings shed light on the emotional turmoil that preceded the chase. At around 11:30 p.m., Kneeland’s girlfriend called authorities, expressing deep concern — she told police he was armed, suffering from mental illness, and said he “will end it all.” (Dallas News)

During that call, the dispatcher also revealed that Kneeland had already sent a goodbye group text to his family. According to NBC News reporting, the Cowboys’ head of security corroborated that the messages were “probably mental health” related, noting that Kneeland had indicated he couldn’t face going to jail. A Backdrop of Grief: Loss and Pressure

Details from Kneeland’s family paint a picture of a young man carrying deep emotional pain. His mother, Wendy Kneeland, died suddenly in early 2024 — just before he was drafted to the NFL. He often spoke about how much he missed her, and even carried her ashes on a necklace.

In interviews, his family described him as “determined,” kind, and deeply affected by the tragedies in his personal life.

What Authorities Are Still Investigating

Despite the new information, key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not disclosed why the attempt to stop his vehicle was made — or what specific traffic violations were involved.

Additionally, it’s unclear what triggered the mental health crisis that led to his final actions. While dispatchers mentioned a “history of mental illness,” there’s no public record of recent treatment or intervention.

The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office is still conducting a full investigation. Toxicology results, a detailed timeline, and other forensic data have not yet been released.

Remembering Kneeland: Legacy and Loss

Despite his short life, Marshawn Kneeland made a strong impression on teammates, coaches, and family. Drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan, he played two seasons for the Cowboys.

His family continues to mourn deeply. In a statement to the Dallas Morning News, they described him as loving and ambitious, someone who carried both strength and vulnerability.

Final Thoughts: A Tragic Reminder

The new details released by police paint a heartbreaking picture: a young NFL player struggling with mental health, moving at dangerous speeds, and ultimately taking his own life. While the full truth may yet come out, one thing is clear — this is a painful reminder of the pressures athletes face both on and off the field.
