Shiocton artist designs over 40 pairs of NFL player’s cleats for league-wide initiative

SHIOCTON, Wis. (WBAY) - We’re just two days away from a border battle between the Vikings and Packers at Lambeau Field, but this Sunday, winning the game isn’t the only cause on the field.

Hundreds of players across the NFL will be taking part in the league’s “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative, and most of Green Bay’s participants are getting their cleats designed by an artist in Shiocton.

If you’ve seen a Packers player in custom-designed cleats over the past few seasons, there’s a strong chance they were painted by Spencer Young.

“It’s kind of like where you get to wear your heart on your sleeve, they get to wear their heart on their feet,” says Young.

This year’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign is set to be the most popular of his designing career.

Nearly every pair that Young paints starts as a blank canvas, and over the course of a few hours, becomes a statement.

Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs, Christian Watson, and Evan Williams are among the top names sporting cleats designed by Young this weekend.

“It’s been a lot of sleepless nights, locked into the studio making sure I come up with the best design for each one,” says Young.

This is Spencer Young’s second year painting cleats for this campaign, and his recognition is growing.

After designing 27 pairs last year, over 40 NFL players across four teams will lace up with his designs on Sunday.

He tells me the importance of his work only grows knowing the campaign’s true meaning.

“You want to convey their message, and I think that’s challenging, but it’s also super rewarding when you find that solution for what design you put on that cleat, so I think with all the designs I came up with this year, it’s definitely very positive results,” says Young.

The same can be said for the Packers entering this weekend’s campaign with record participation.

“They highlight causes that affect their families, affect them, maybe affect their kids, and it’s just an amazing opportunity for them to showcase on a bigger stage, and also bring awareness to these causes that go under the radar,” says Nathanael Washington, a player alumni specialist with the Green Bay Packers.

After the campaign, players can raise money for their cause by putting their cleats on NFL auction.

After a quick rest, Young will be back at the table, working on his craft.
