Real Madrid handed major transfer boost as Premier League defender could leave in January

Real Madrid might have received an unexpected lift in the early stages of their defensive rebuild, with signs emerging that one of their long-term targets could be on the move sooner than expected.

The Spanish giants have been keeping a close eye on Marc Guehi for months, and the Crystal Palace captain’s contract situation is now pushing him closer to the exit door ahead of the January transfer window.

Reports from Mundo Deportivo indicate that Crystal Palace are not ruling out a winter sale, largely to avoid losing the England international for nothing next summer.

Guehi has already made his stance clear by refusing to sign a new deal, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the club’s executives are now evaluating the best possible solution.

What is Palace’s stance?

Providing clarity from the touchline, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner addressed the situation publicly.

Speaking before the press, he explained the uncertainty surrounding the defender’s immediate future. With context to the growing rumours, Glasner said,

“I don’t know, it will be the club’s decision. Marc shows every week that he is 100% committed to Crystal Palace.

“There’s no need to think about it. We have 15 games until January 10th and he shouldn’t be thinking about a possible sale.

“Of course, we are prepared for anything, but I don’t know what will happen.”

Palace know Guehi is entering the final stretch of his deal, and once January arrives, he will be able to negotiate with any club to join without requiring a transfer fee.

Real Madrid in no hurry

For Real Madrid, the situation is quite clear. Despite their admiration for Guehi, club sources insist they do not intend to engage in a bidding contest during the winter window.

Their strategy is focused on long-term planning, and they are fully aware that they could secure the defender for free once the season concludes.

At the same time, Los Blancos are not limiting themselves to a single target.

In that regard, both Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate are reportedly still higher on Real Madrid’s shortlist.
