Harvey Elliott looked to have the footballing world at his feet when he joined Aston Villa in the summer, he’s now in footballing limbo.

Football is a fickle game and it doesn’t take long for players to go from being on top of the world to wondering where it all went wrong.

Harvey Elliott is learning the hard way this season that it doesn’t take much for fortunes to turn having led England to the Under-21 European Championships earning the player of the tournament accolade at the same time.

Having to watch Elliot Anderson become a mainstay in the senior squad will only rub salt into the wounds. A summer move to Aston Villa looked like the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents, only for it to quickly turn sour and leave Liverpool with a decision to make.

Liverpool consider alternate Harvey Elliott plan

Unai Emery has spoken about Elliott and what he needs to improve on, but the 22-year old has barely kicked a ball under the Spaniard. A return to Liverpool suits nobody given the signing of Florian Wirtz with Football Insider claiming that the Reds are open to letting the playmaker leave on a cut-price deal, potentially lower than the £35m option to buy fee that was agreed with Villa.

Elliott could have been one of the players who Thomas Tuchel gave a chance to in his new era of England, however, he is now barely making the top ten for attacking midfielders.

Elliott has learned the hard way that following a manager’s instructions is how you get game time, regardless of how talented you are. There are no doubts about what the former Fulham youngster is capable of, but it takes more than talent to make it at the highest level of football.

His options will be limited too having played for two clubs already this season which means that only a permanent exit can be agreed.

Elliott’s World Cup dream becoming a distant memory

Speaking at the end of last season, Elliott seemed intent on digging in at Anfield and becoming a regular fixture under Arne Slot. Elliott told The Anfield Wrap: “If I had it my way I would be here for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that.

“I love everything about the club, but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what's best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad.

“I want to keep being successful as a player. It's something I still need to review. I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. we have many new players who have come in so whether it blocks the path for me I'm not sure. It's something I need to have a look at and decide.”

If Elliott’s dreams are to come true, he needs to find a new home where he spends more time on the pitch and less time sitting on the bench or even in the stands.
