Injury news from Manchester United's upcoming opponents as David Moyes reveals fresh Everton blow

Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed that summer signing Merlin Rohl will miss the Monday evening clash with Manchester United after undergoing surgery on a hernia.

The midfielder arrived on Merseyside from SC Freiburg on a season-long loan with the obligation to buy for £17 million. He has yet to start for the Toffees but has made four appearances after suffering a groin injury shortly after making his move to the club.

He will not play a part against United on Monday after he required an operation following Everton’s 2-0 win over Fulham before the international break.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Moyes said: “Unfortunately, Merlin had an operation on his hernia a week last Monday, which is going to keep him out for a few weeks. Hopefully by the time we get to December he will be pretty ready and fit to go again.”

Everton will remain without Jarrad Branthwaite for the contest after the centre-back underwent hamstring surgery last month. Moyes has no timescale for when the defender will return. He added: “For neither of them, we haven’t got dates. Merlin got done on the Monday after we played Fulham. We knew he had a bit of a problem and got it sorted.”

The only other Toffees star who will miss the game with United is defender Nathan Patterson. The right-back has also undergone surgery on a hernia.

Moyes could hand more minutes to summer signing Tyler Dibling, who has so far struggled to get into the starting XI due to the form of Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye.

"We're looking forward to getting Tyler more minutes as we go along and get him featuring in the games," added Moyes. "He's seeing Ili do really well on the right but we really like him as a player and he's certainly a player for our future."

Meanwhile, United will not have summer signing Benjamin Sesko available against Everton after he was forced off in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

"He is going to be a few weeks out," United boss Ruben Amorim said. "Not that serious, we have to be careful. He is feeling better."

Harry Maguire will not play against Everton either while Kobbie Mainoo missed training on Friday but is set to be available. Lisandro Martinez remains out but is getting closer to a return.

"Maguire is not ready," Amorim said. "Kobbie didn’t train today but I think we could see Kobbie tomorrow so we’ll see.” He added: "There is an opportunity for other players like the under-21s. We will see it is not ideal. They are so important in our team."
