Reliable Journalist Claims Liverpool Have Joined Manchester United In £100M Transfer Battle

Liverpool have entered the race to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to The Times reporter Paul Hirst.

The journalist is among the most reliable when it comes to transfer stories, although he does usually specialise in Manchester United.

He claims that Arne Slot’s side have joined the Red Devils and Anderson’s former club Newcastle in battling for Anderson’s signature.

Forest are not expected to sell one of their prized assets on the cheap, though, and they have set an asking price of around £100m.

Why do Liverpool want Anderson?

The 23-year-old has caught the eye with his performances since moving to Forest at the start of last season.

Anderson is press-resistant with the ability to carry the ball great distances, while he is not afraid to put in a tackle.

Slot’s midfield is technically adept, but the likes of Alexis Mac Allister are not particularly good at covering ground, so Anderson would offer a different option. Whether he is worth £100m is another matter.

Are Liverpool pursuing any other midfielders?

The Reds have been linked with one other midfield player over the past week – Kees Smit. He is someone that Slot has known about since his time managing the player’s club AZ Alkmaar 5+ years ago.

However, sporting director Richard Hughes is unlikely to be prioritising the midfield as an area to strengthen in the immediate future.

A centre-back is deemed a top priority, with the likes of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck on the club’s radar.

There is also an argument that another right-back is needed, considering the injury problems that both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have suffered from this campaign. Neither player is expected to return to fitness before mid-December.
