“I Hope He Proves Me Wrong”: Falcons Icon Gets Brutally Honest on Michael Penix Jr.

Atlanta Falcons legend Todd McClure didn’t hold back when asked about quarterback Michael Penix Jr., sharing tough but honest thoughts about the youngster’s future. After a rough second NFL season cut short by a serious knee injury, McClure said he’s unsure whether Penix has shown enough to be the long-term answer in Atlanta.

Before suffering his latest setback, Penix had been struggling to find consistency, throwing just nine touchdowns in 10 games while completing barely 60 percent of his passes. Once praised for his arm talent and mobility during the draft process, his performance has instead revealed hesitancy under pressure and a lack of command within the pocket. Yardbarker noted that Penix often played conservatively, avoiding mistakes rather than pushing for big plays, a mindset that limited the Falcons’ offense even before his ACL tear.

McClure, who spent 14 seasons anchoring Atlanta’s offensive line, compared Penix’s poise unfavorably to that of past greats, highlighting his difficulty stepping up in the pocket against pressure. He said quarterbacks don’t need elite speed but must feel and sidestep rushers instinctively, something Penix hasn’t shown consistently. The young passer’s recurring injuries, dating back to college, have only compounded these concerns, putting his development at risk.

The Falcons now face a daunting quarterback dilemma. Veteran Kirk Cousins will finish the year under center, while Penix faces a recovery timeline that could extend well into next season. The team’s front office and coaching staff will inevitably evaluate whether to stay committed to him or consider other options in 2026.

McClure recently shared his take on Penix and whether he can be the QB Atlanta needs. This can be seen in an interview the franchise legend did for Betway Insider.

When healthy, has Penix Jr. shown signs of being a franchise quarterback?

After watching his short body of work so far in the NFL, I do question a little bit whether he can be a franchise quarterback.

His arm is extremely strong, but I’m unsure about his pocket presence. This is where he has a hard time.

It might be an unfair comparison, but when you watch some great quarterbacks like Tom Brady, they weren’t the most fleet of foot, but they can step up three inches, avoid that pass rush and make plays down the field. As of now, Penix Jr. hasn’t shown this enough.

In the draft process, we heard about how athletic he was and his ability to move, but that’s not the quarterback we’ve seen so far. I played with Michael Vick, and he was a quarterback who could really get out of the pocket and move.

Penix Jr. hasn’t been extremely accurate, and he’s had a hard time moving in the pocket.

If you ask me right now, and I hate to say it, but I don’t think he’s the long-term guy for the Falcons.

I hope he proves me wrong.

Still, McClure expressed hope that Penix can recover and finally reach his potential after another grueling rehab. As the franchise stares down another disappointing season, Penix’s next comeback may determine not only his own future but the direction of the entire team.

Whether he rebounds or fades from Atlanta’s plans, the Falcons icon’s message captured the feeling across the fan base. As it stands, there’s real doubt mixed with cautious faith that Penix might yet prove everyone wrong.
