Chelsea players could count their lucky stars on Saturday lunchtime as they escaped a "stonewall penalty".

The Blues had been up against it at Turf Moor, with struggling Burnley looking the better of the two sides coming out of the November international break. And as the clock ticked over the half-hour mark, they were convinced they should have been awarded a spot-kick.

Robert Sanchez, who was in net for Chelsea, appeared to take a goal-kick when he passed a stationary ball to Trevoh Chalobah. However, Chalobah leaned over and stopped the ball with his hand - then taking a goal-kick.

Burnley players were convinced they should have been awarded a penalty, with Sanchez restarting play with his action.

However, referee Peter Bankes disagreed with the protests and waved play-on.

"That sums us up perfectly, especially when playing out from the back. Nobody has a clue what they’re doing and that right there, is a CLEAR penalty to Burnley against Chalobah. It’s handball," one Chelsea fan admitted.

"Burnley have just been robbed, they should’ve had a penalty. Sanchez literally took the goal kick," a second fumed.

While a third said: "That’s a blatant penalty to Burnley that. Keeper knows full well what he’s doing..."

And another added: "Trevoh Chalobah has got away with one there, should be a penalty to Burnley for handball."

Burnley's frustration would only grow as Chelsea broke the deadlock against the run of the game.

"It's a really good goal. Really well worked," Andy Reid, who was on duty for BBC Radio 5 Live said. "It is a lovely header back across goal. You just felt Chelsea were growing into this and now they have their goal."
