Before this game, it might have been only the most confident Chelsea fans who would have declared their side in the title race, but having moved to within three points of leaders Arsenal with this deserved win at Burnley, perhaps the number of believers will have increased.

They came into the game on an upward trajectory, having won four of their last five and risen up the standings to third, and the mood around the club will only have improved here.

The omens always pointed towards a Chelsea win. They had won eight of their nine Premier League trips to Turf Moor, including each of the last six, scoring at least three goals in each of those six wins.

Manager Enzo Maresca named another youthful team, with Chelsea becoming only the second team in Premier League history to name 50 consecutive starting XIs without a single player aged 30 or older included.

It was Burnley, however, that started the brighter of the sides, and that isn’t something they normally do. They had four shots in the first 12 minutes, which was as many as they’d managed in the opening 12 minutes of all 11 of their Premier League games so far this season combined. It was an impressive start from the team who, before the game, had had the fewest shots (90) and lowest xG total (8.3) of all teams in the top flight. However, they didn’t create any clear-cut openings and, as a result, couldn’t make their early dominance count. And as half-time approached, Chelsea made them pay for it.

A long ball forward from Tosin Adarabioyo found Marc Cucurella, who had snuck forward from left-back. The Spaniard brought the ball down and laid it off for Jamie Gittens to cross for an unmarked Pedro Neto to head in at the back post. With their first proper sight of goal, Chelsea had taken the lead.

The goal meant Chelsea had scored seven headed Premier League goals this season – the joint most in the league alongside Arsenal – while it was also Neto’s fifth goal involvement in his last five league games, having got just one in his first seven appearances of the season.

As well as giving Burnley an uphill battle against one of the best teams in the country, the omens also immediately got even worse. Their manager, Scott Parker, had never won a Premier League match when his side had conceded the first goal, holding the record for the most games managed without winning after going 1-0 down (37). Meanwhile, Burnley had, at the time, lost 14 and won none of their last 15 home Premier League matches when trailing at half-time. Both records would get worse when defeat in this match was confirmed, as Parker moved onto 38 games without a comeback win, and Burnley made it 15 losses in 16 after going behind.

But with the deficit just a single goal, there was always a feeling that Burnley were in with a chance of getting something. That said, having created a decent amount early on, they carried little attacking threat for much of the second half and, after having six shots in the opening 39 minutes of the match, they had only two between that attempt and the full-time whistle, and one of them came when they were 2-0 down.

There were nonetheless a few nerves in the Chelsea ranks, and they weren’t helped by Benoît Badiashile getting booked for tussling with Burnley’s Maxime Estève in the box. Somehow, he avoided giving away a penalty for his troubles, though not before Maresca had been given his customary yellow card. No manager has picked up more cards in the last two Premier League seasons than him (8).

However, with just a couple of minutes of the game remaining and Burnley piling forward in search of an equaliser, Chelsea struck on the break to double their lead and wrap up the win.

Enzo Fernandez goal vs Burnley

Neto raced upfield and then slipped Marc Guiu in down the right. The teenager did excellently to get away from his marker, before teeing up the onrushing Enzo Fernández to slam home. In doing so, Guiu became the third teenager to score or assist for Chelsea in the Premier League this season (also Estêvão and Josh Acheampong), making this the first time ever Chelsea have had three do so in a single season.

This wasn’t the game that would springboard Chelsea into the title race, but it was a good test of their credentials, and their position in the table makes it impossible for anyone to ignore them entirely.
