BREAKING Arsenal vs Tottenham to have facial recognition deployed for North London derby

Live facial recognition technology will be deployed at Sunday's (November 23) north London derby, the Metropolitan Police has announced.

The system will be operational at two spots leading up to the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal take on Tottenham.

Police will also deploy live-streaming body cameras that beam footage directly from officers on patrol back to the control room for instant intelligence updates, the force revealed.

Additionally, select specially-trained officers at the ground will carry SelectaDNA tagging spray, which when deployed during trouble leaves a distinctive mark on troublemakers that glows under UV light later, giving forensic proof to nail individuals who caused mayhem long after they've scarpered from the match, the Met explained.

Since January 2024, the Met has nabbed over 1,300 criminals from London's streets using live facial recognition (LFR), with more than 1,000 of those either charged or cautioned, according to the force.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman, overseeing the policing operation, declared: "The safety of those attending football matches in London is our priority, and we want everyone to enjoy the game."

He continued: "This is why it is important that we make the best use of available technology to support officers to do their job more effectively.

"That allows us to keep the public safe, prevent crime and disorder, and respond efficiently to any incidents."

Lindsey Chiswick, who leads LFR for the Met and nationally, explained: "Live Facial Recognition is a game-changing technology that helps officers locate people we want to speak to – such as those who are wanted or have court-imposed conditions."

She continued: "It is deployed on a case-by-case basis and where there is intelligence to suggest a threat to public safety.

"We will continue to consider the use of LFR at events, dependent on the intelligence we hold, to ensure an effective and proportionate approach."
