Jets could be without key special teams standout in Week 12 after another injury

The New York Jets might once again be without one of their most electric players on Sunday. All-Pro kick returner Kene Nwangwu, who has been a rare bright spot for the Jets this season, popped up on the injury report this week, and his status for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens is in doubt.

Nwangwu first appeared [on the injury report on Thursday](https://www.newyorkjets.com/team/injury-report/) and did not practice due to a hamstring injury. He was able to return to practice in a limited capacity on Friday, but he's still listed as questionable for Week 12.

The former Minnesota Vikings draft pick has battled injuries throughout his Jets career, playing just two games with the team last season before a hand injury landed him on the injured reserve.

He suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1, sidelining him for four games. Nwangwu returned in Week 6, played twice, and then went down with a concussion. He came back again in Week 10, but after only two more games, he appears to have re-aggravated that same hamstring in practice.

When healthy, Nwangwu has been nothing short of sensational. He leads the NFL with a staggering 35.4 yards per kick return, the best mark in the league by a wide margin.

He’s also Pro Football Focus' highest-graded kick returner this season and has already delivered one of the Jets’ signature plays of 2025, a 99-yard touchdown return in Week 10 against Cleveland.

Nwangwu has legitimately already established himself as one of the most explosive and dynamic kick returners in NFL history. [He’s actually tied for ninth in NFL history](https://thejetpress.com/kene-nwangwu-already-one-best-kick-returners-nfl-history-seriously-01k9xhsesrpa) in kick return touchdowns, with as many (5) as guys like Devin Hester and Percy Harvin, despite returning fewer than 80 kicks in his career

His 29.8-yard career average ranks second all-time, behind only Hall of Famer Gale Sayers. Nwangwu is one of the most dangerous special-teams weapons in the NFL, but his injury woes continue to cause issues.

If Nwangwu can’t go on Sunday, the Jets would likely turn to Isaiah Williams as their primary kick returner, with Khalil Herbert or John Metchie potentially filling the No. 2 return role. Williams has quietly turned into a solid special-teams contributor for the Jets, but there's no replacing Nwangwu.

Nwangwu may have returned to practice on Friday, but given his history and the fact that he's already missed four games this season due to the same injury, the Jets might decide to play it safe and let him sit for another week.
