Newcastle United will be without Anthony Gordon for the clash with Man City tonight.

The England international was rated 50-50 for the encounter with Pep Guardiola's side with Gordon's absence - caused by a hip injury - seeing Sean Neave called into the match day squad.

There was also no sign of Kieran Trippier as the players walked into St James' Park with Tino Livramento back from a knee injury.

Livramento had not featured for two months after suffering his knee woe against Arsenal. But Anthony Elanga was on duty despite leaving the Sweden squad for "personal reasons".

Newcastle started with Nick Pope in goal with Tino Livramento right-back and Lewis Hall also back in from the start. With no Anthony Gordon involved Harvey Barnes started on the left.

Fabian Schar got the nod to start ahead of Sven Botman while Dan Burn was suspended after his red card picked up against Brentford during the 3-1 defeat in London two weeks ago.

Trippier is understood to have picked up a knock in training.

UNITED: Pope; Livramento, Thiaw, Schar, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Barnes; Woltemade

Subs: Ramsdale, Ruddy, Botman, Elanga, Willock, A.Murphy, Ramsey, Neave, Miley
