Newcastle United v Man City: Preview & latest injury news
Newcastle United confirmed starting XI and subs for their Premier League clash against Manchester City.
The Magpies head into the game lingering above the Premier League relegation places following back-to-back away defeats to West Ham United and Brentford.
However, at St James’ Park, United boast a much stronger record, winning their last five matches in all competitions.
Newcastle United starting XI & subs v Man City confirmed - injury boost
Following the 3-1 defeat at Brentford, Eddie Howe has made three changes to his starting line-up.
Tino Livramento is immediately restored to the starting XI following eight weeks out with a knee injury. Livramento starts at right-back in place of Kieran Trippier, while Lewis Hall comes in at left-back with Dan Burn suspended.
Fabian Schar is also preferred ahead of Sven Botman at centre-back.
Newcastle United triple injury blow v Man City
In addition to Burn, Newcastle are without Trippier and Emil Krafth, who drop out of the matchday squad entirely, while Anthony Gordon remains sidelined with a hip injury.
Gordon had been managing with the issue before being forced to withdraw against Athletic Bilbao. He missed the following match at Brentford and pulled out of England duty for games against Serbia and Albania.
Howe said Gordon was “touch and go” for Man City but a late decision has seen the winger left out.
Newcastle United still without Yoane Wissa and Will Osula
Meanwhile, Yoane Wissa and Will Osula remain sidelined. As a result, 18-year-old Sean Neave has been called into the squad to support Woltemade for the first time this season.
Wissa joined from Brentford for £55million on September 1 but is yet to make his Newcastle debut after a week later sustaining a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury on international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 29-year-old’s return has been pushed back on a few occasions, to the point now where Howe is reluctant to give an exact date.
Providing an update, Howe said: “No, I haven't got a clear, defined return date for you. He's working well, so he's not back training with us yet, but he's close.
“He's working with a sports scientist. He's in that phase, sort of moves past his physios. He's now back with the sports science team and he's also almost entering a pre-season with them currently. He's doing a lot of work.
“He's looking good, looking better with every session, and as I say, he's close to training with us. But until he gets to there, it's very difficult to give you a date.”
Osula has been ruled out of at least the couple of matches as he recovers from an ongoing ankle problem.
Howe said: “Will Osula, we haven't seen back in training yet, but again, I think injury hasn't been totally plain sailing. I think there's been a few days where he's felt really good and a few days then where he's felt a bit of pain, so I think he might be going to see a specialist on Monday. Not necessarily on a negative, but just to get sort of full clearance that he's OK to continue as he is.
“So we won't see him back sort of in the next couple of games, I don't think.
