Manchester United star withdraws from community appearance due to 'accident in training'

Matheus Cunha is under an injury cloud for Manchester United ahead of a fixture against Everton after suffering an 'accident in training'.

Yet they may have to make do without Cunha, as a fitness update on the Brazilian emerged via the unlikeliest of sources.

What has happened to Matheus Cunha?

An Instagram post from Visit Altrincham has revealed the Brazilian had been due to turn on the Christmas lights in the nearby town on Saturday night.

But in a bizarre update, the social media page revealed Cunha is no longer able to attend the event.

A statement read: "Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons."

United are yet to provide an update on Cunha's availability for Monday's fixture.

talkSPORT also understands Cunha's appearance was a personal one and not arranged through the club.

Should Cunha be ruled out of his side's next match, this would come as a huge blow.

While he has scored just once in 10 Premier League appearances following his summer switch from Wolves, the 26-year-old has been an ever-present for United this season.

Cunha has featured in all but one of the club's league games this season, only missing September's Manchester derby defeat to Manchester City through injury.

The news surrounding Cunha comes after Amorim confirmed on Friday that main striker Benjamin Sesko would be out until the middle of next month with a knee injury.

United's injury woes

Sesko hobbled off in United's 2-2 draw at Tottenham before the November international break.

And if Cunha is also forced to sit out on Monday night, it could force the Portuguese coach into a major reshuffle.

Joshua Zirkzee may be brought into the starting XI, while Mason Mount could come into contention, having previously been deployed in attack.

United also have other injury concerns beyond just attacking areas.

After their players returned to Carrington following the two-week international break, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo both sat out training in the week as they recovered from respective injuries.

However, Amorim has since revealed Mainoo could still feature against Everton.

Meanwhile asked about the midfielder on Friday, the head coach responded: "Kobbie didn't train today but we could see him tomorrow."

How have United performed this season?

After a disappointing start to the season, United have picked up more recently, and are unbeaten in their last five league games.

During this time, Ruben Amorim's side have won three times, including a 2-1 win over champions Liverpool, while they have drawn their last two matches.

This leaves them 10th in the league table, but just two points behind Crystal Palace in fourth, who have played a game more.

And if results on Sunday go their way, victory over Everton on Monday night could well see United climb into the top four.

But they may just have have been dealt an early blow here, after the availability of £62.5million summer signing Cunha was thrown into doubt.
