Liverpool suffered a 3-0 loss against Nottingham Forest as the Reds fell to a sixth successive defeat in seven games.
Arne Slot insisted that Liverpool’s horrendous run of form is his responsibility after the latest defeat.
An insipid 3-0 loss against Nottingham Forest at Anfield was a sixth Premier League reverse in seven matches for the defending champions. Liverpool were deservedly beaten by Sean Dyche’s side as their issues were laid bare. The Reds were vulnerable in defence and listless in attack throughout the game.
Despite Liverpool starting the encounter well, Forest opened the scoring with their first chance when Murillo pounced on a loose ball from a corner in the 33rd minute. Less than a minute into the second half, Nicola Savona doubled the visitors’ lead before Morgan Gibbs-White put the gloss on the triumph with 13 minutes remaining.
Come Sunday night, Liverpool could find themselves 11 points behind leaders Arsenal. Any remaining hopes of challenging for the title have been dashed and the Reds’ jettison from being crowned champions last season has been hugely unexpected.
And Slot says that the buck stops with him. The Liverpool head coach said at his post-match press conference: “It's my responsibility if we win or lose. What I see is the team, and by the way our fans as well stayed until the end, supported the team until the end and the players keep on fighting until the end.
“But I always seen today that wasn't at [Manchester] City - we are not the only team at City who have struggled in the first half (losing 2-0 before suffering a 3-0 defeat) - but every game we have played we have been the dominant team and been able to create chances.
“Like I said, lately it's always constantly that we miss our chances and the ones we concede go in but that will never continue throughout the whole season. But we need to have that moment of energy of scoring a goal. If you are 1-0 up and playing well then the other team feels like: 'We have played half an hour, are 1-0 down and hardly seen the ball'. The opposite ting happened. They got a big, big enevry boost from scoring.
“I see a lot of things where in a normal situation, the result would have been different but we are now in a difficult situation and you need to do even more to get the result than when things go in your favour.
“Of course, there is a way out, especially with the quality players you're having. When you lose, if you make a line-up or substitutions and look back, you always thinking: 'Where can we do better, where can we adjust?' That is something else than doubting yourself but I want to emphasise I am responsible for the current losses. You're responsible when you're winning and you're losing. That's why I prefer, unless you ask me that question to talk about referees decisions or other excuses, I can never come up with enough excuses for us to perform or have the results we have. that is far from good enough and I'm responsible for that.”
