Erling Haaland came close twice in the first 45 minutes, before Phil Foden stroked wide from a promising position inside the box.

Harvey Barnes grabbed the opener just after the hour mark, before Ruben Dias levelled five minutes later.

Barnes had the final say in a pulsating encounter, striking the winner with 20 minutes left to play at a jubilant St James’ Park.

Nunes, who played the entire 90 minutes in another good shift at right-back, spoke to City Studios after the game.

“I think it could have been different. I think we had a lot of chances that we could have converted and we would be talking about a different game,” he declared.

“But this is football. We didn’t take our chances, they took it. It is what it is.

“Today wasn’t our day. If it was another day we would put all the balls in the net and like I said the result would be different.

“I don’t think there’s any magical explanation.”
