Chris Paul could have greater NBA legacy after retirement

The NBA world received some big news on Saturday. NBA insider Shams Charania reported that veteran Chris Paul will retire at the end of this season.

Paul’s career resume is one that makes him a first ballot hall of famer. In 21 seasons, the point guard earned 12 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA selections, is a member of the 75 best players to play in the NBA, and 9 All-Defense selections.

This isn’t a slight to Paul; I truly believe he may be the greatest point guard of his era. However, I feel the soon-to-be Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer could excel even more when his career is done.

It happens all the time; we see former players try their hand at coaching when their careers are over. To me, Paul could be one of those players who absolutely crushes it in a coaching role.

A point guard is often the captain of the ship. Sure, many allude to Paul winning a ring, conversations that are normally had by the drunkest friend group at the bar. But being a champion isn’t the only thing that makes a great player.

Mentor

So cool to see Chris Paul having dinner with SGA and his family with his MVP trophy on the table 🥹

Even though he is still playing, Paul is perceived as a mentor to many in the game today. Including the reigning league MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The pair spent time together during Paul’s lone season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. If the best player in the league thinks this highly of Paul, it’s safe to say many others do.

Getting Paul on a coaching staff would be huge for any team. While it would be surprising to see him immediately jump into a head coaching role, don’t count it out.

JJ Redick was doing a podcast, then became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Paul’s resume is more than enough for him to jump into a head coaching role as soon as possible.
