Harvey Barnes bagged a second half double at St James’ Park to give the hosts the three points, either side of a Ruben Dias strike for the visiting Blues.

That didn’t tell the full story with a host of chances for both sides throughout the 90 minutes, with two good City opportunities apiece for Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Guardiola was happy with the commitment of his players in the north east but disappointed they couldn’t convert more of our openings.

“We gave everything,” he told the media at his post-match press conference.

“We wanted to make a step like we have done in the last two months but this is not an easy place to come after the international break.

“There is a long, long, long way to go.

“It was a tight game, chances for both sides. Gigio was extraordinary.

“We missed chances and second half we concede a goal.

“There were more chances for both sides but we could not take the result.”
