The Premier League has explained why Harvey Barnes' second goal for Newcastle United against Manchester City was permitted to stand.

Following a scoreless opening period at St James' Park, the match witnessed rapid goals from both sides, with Barnes breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute before Ruben Dias' deflected effort brought the visitors level five minutes afterwards.

Barnes then netted again to restore the Magpies' lead in the 70th minute, though his goal necessitated a prolonged pause while VAR examined two elements for offside. The goal materialised when Nick Woltemade nodded down towards the far post for Bruno Guimaraes, whose effort struck the crossbar.

The ball then fell to Barnes, who controlled expertly before dispatching it into the roof of the net from short range. As he celebrated, City's players protested to the referee, contending it should be disallowed because Guimaraes was offside from Woltemade's header.

Former Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate shared that view. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think Guimaraes is offside from the Woltemade header," reports the Mirror.

Meanwhile, others took to social media to share their view. One X user wrote: "What happened to the lines? Bruno surely offside there!"

However, the referee ultimately signalled to the centre circle, triggering celebrations at St James' Park - and a clarification from the Premier League Match Centre. The statement read: "The referee's call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with both Guimarães and Barnes in onside positions in the build-up.

"The VAR also checked and confirmed the referee's call of no foul on Donnarumma prior to the goal."

Accompanying the post were images demonstrating that Dias had played Guimaraes onside with his shoulder. This decision proved pivotal, as Newcastle managed to fend off late pressure to secure a 2-1 victory over City.

This outcome left City in third place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by four points, who are set to face Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday. It marked Eddie Howe's first triumph over City, significantly easing the pressure on the Magpies manager after a mixed-bag of results to start the season.
