Eddie Howe could bring back his Champions League sharp shooter Anthony Gordon back in Marseille on Tuesday night.
The England international did not feature against Man City in the 2-1 win at St James' Park but could get his return in the south of France. Left out because of a hip injury, Gordon was not risked after a fortnight on the sidelines.
But while Gordon could be back sooner rather than later, Howe was unsure on when he will be able to welcome back Kieran Trippier who also missed the encounter at St James' Park.
Howe said: "Anthony is very close. He was just not quite ready today.
"He is working hard, and he will be ready in the next few days. Kieran - I'm not sure if he will make it, I am awaiting feedback from the medical team."
Newcastle were undoubtedly boosted by the return of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall who gave the team a new dimension. And Howe felt the pair made the difference, but spoke of the overall display by his team.
He said: **"**We were close to our very best, really really good performance from the players. We created a lot of chances in that first half, but were disappointed not to go in leading.
"You are always in a position against Manchester City where you make one mistake and you can concede.
"We were brave, ambitious and scored some great goals."
Newcastle have not won a game away from home in the Premier League but have now won six in a row in all competitions at home. It is a baffling sequence but Howe said: "To beat Man City should give us the confidence we need.
"We need to try and use this result as a turning point in our season both home and away to get a result."
