Michael Owen has criticised Chelsea striker Liam Delap for perceived selfishness in front of goal during a 2-0 Premier League win away to Burnley. The former England forward analysed the early kick-off clash as Enzo Maresca’s team secured victory at Turf Moor with goals in each half from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.
Delap, starting as the central striker, was replaced by Malo Gusto in the 67th minute and is still waiting for his first Chelsea goal after a £30 million summer move from Ipswich Town. The 22-year-old has yet to score in the league this season, despite the result moving Chelsea to within three points of leaders Arsenal in the table.
Owen told Premier League Productions that Delap’s first-half display was inconsistent. When asked about the striker’s contribution, he said:
“A mixed bag, I feel. I quite like this lad, I do feel he’s got quite a lot to offer, I do think he is quite raw and he can get better.”
Highlighting a promising break where Delap chose to shoot from distance rather than play in Neto, he added:
“I do think in this situation he needs to be a little bit more unselfish, he probably could have passed it a couple of times.”
However, Owen also praised the forward’s movement and potential, concluding:
“I think with a little bit of coaching, this fella could be a very good player.”
Enzo Maresca Urges Patience From Liam Delap
Enzo Maresca struck a more supportive tone than Michael Owen after the match, saying of Delap:
“Be patient, no doubt that the goal will arrive and the way he worked today was very important.”
When asked if he had a message for the striker, the Chelsea manager also added:
“Liam is also that kind of striker that you as a defender are always worried when he’s around you, so that’s also good for the team.”
