Liverpool humiliated in 60-year low at Anfield, Bayern star’s masterclass as 17-year-old creates more history

Liverpool lose 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest

Liverpool have lost back-to-back games by three or more goals for the first time since 1965, going down 3-0 to Nottingham Forest at home overnight in a result that will deepen concerns for Arne Slot, with the club heading towards a crisis, if they aren’t in one already.

The Reds became just the fourth defending Premier League champions to lose six of their first 12 matches, after Blackburn Rovers (1995-96), Chelsea (2015-16) and Leicester City (2016-17) as goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White condemned them to a brutal loss at a home ground, which no longer feels like a fortress.

The highest any of those sides mentioned finished was seventh and it feels like the Reds now have a fight on their hands to finish in the top four this season, let alone challenge Arsenal for the title with the Gunners already eight points ahead of them, with a game in hand.

Liverpool have now lost two of their previous three home games, which is as many as they had lost in their previous 53.

“It’s a very difficult situation at the moment,” captain Virgil Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“We concede too many easy goals. In the first half an hour we were really good, we created really good opportunities. Then they scored from a set-piece, again. You can ask yourself if he was in front of Alisson, but it counted.

“There was nervousness after we conceded. You sensed that we were trying to rush things, to get the equaliser as soon as possible. Overall we were just not good. In terms of the battles, challenges, second balls, we were just too rushed.

“We’re just in a very, very difficult moment, and we have to get out of this. I’d rather do it by talking in the dressing room than speaking to you guys.

“We have to take responsibility. Football is a team game. We have to digest this, take it on the chin and work harder. I’ve said that quite a lot this season, it’s not been working out, but we need to keep going.

“The atmosphere, in my eyes, is very bad. We need to look in the mirror.”

Speaking after the match, Slot took responsibility for the result.

“Losing 3-0 at home is a very, very bad result,” Slot said.

“Unexpected if you look at the first half hour. I hadn’t seen us creating that much all season, we were able to create a lot. It’s a very difficult cocktail to drink if you create a lot of chances and then every time you concede one, the opposition score.

“When we win or lose, it’s my responsibility. We’ve been the dominant team, lately it’s always constantly that we miss our chances and the ones we concede go in.

“Of course, there is a way out with the quality players we have. I’m responsible for the current losses. I can never come up with enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I’m responsible for that.”

Martin Keown told BBC Sport: “Whether it’s a crisis, I don’t know.

“It’s certainly a major problem for the manager to go six defeats from seven. Unthinkable.

“The wheels are coming off now for Arne Slot.

“It was Jurgen Klopp’s team and he has tried to come in and make changes, but he has spent £450m on players and they are going backwards.”

Liverpool sit 11th in the Premier League table after 12 matches, with a midweek Champions League clash against PSV to be followed by three winnable clashes against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds United.

Newcastle beat Manchester City amid huge controversy

Manchester City are having their worst start to a season in five years and second-worst in the Pep Guardiola era, falling to their fourth loss of the season 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James Park on Sunday morning AEDT.

Harvey Barnes scored twice for the Magpies, while Ruben Dias scored the lone goal for City, who felt they should have been awarded a penalty for a late challenge from Fabien Schar on Phil Foden after 18 minutes, while there was also a contentious moment where Jeremy Doku’s shot struck Malick Thiaw on the arm inside the area.

Guardiola ran straight to the ref at full-time, but when asked about what had been discussed he replied: “Nothing, everything is fine.”

Meanwhile, Dias was left fuming after the match, feeling goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was fouled in the build-up to Barnes’ winner.

“Out of all the decisions, only the second goal – I think we need to make it make sense,” he told Sky Sports.

“Because where’s the sense in their player pushing our goalkeeper outside the goal? What are we allowing, and for how long?

“Sometimes you allow it, sometimes you don’t. Where’s the rule? What can you actually do?

“I found it weird that he was out of position, so we immediately knew something was wrong. But I managed to see the review and it’s Barnes pushing him away from the goal. We’re so picky with certain contacts, but one like this with the keeper, you allow it? It is what it is. If that’s the rule, fine. But let us do the same.

“Back in the day, this was a foul. Now apparently it’s allowed. People are going to say I’m finding excuses but it’s nothing like it. Today Newcastle were better and they deserved the win. Because of that, they were allowed to score more chances than us. I terms of the rule, there needs to be a rule.”

City remain third on the Premier League ladder, but they are already four points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Barcelona thump Athletic Club in Camp Nou return

Barcelona went top of LaLiga overnight – although their stay may be brief with Real Madrid still to play – as they thumped Athletic Club 4-0 at the Camp Nou.

Ferran Torres netted a brace and was joined on the score sheet by Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski, with teen sensation Lamine Yamal again in the thick of the action with two assists.

This was Barcelona’s first match at their home ground in 909 days after construction work on the venue and they marked it by continuing their streak against Athletic, who haven’t won at the ground in 24 years.

Real Madrid will leapfrog back to the summit if they beat Elche, with the match to kick off at 7am on Monday morning AEDT.

Bayern Munich continued their extraordinary run of form in the Bundesliga with a thumping 6-2 win over SC Freiberg overnight.

Michael Olise was the star of the show with an incredible return of two goals and three assists, while Harry Kane, Dayot Upamecano, Nicolas Jackson and 17-year-old wonderkid Lennart Karl also found the back of the net.

Incredibly, Bayern were actually down 2-0 after 17 minutes in this match, before the Bavarian giants kicked into gear and blew their opponents away.

Olise now has six goals and seven assists in just 11 matches this term, with Bayern already eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after only 11 matches.

Meanwhile, teen talent Karl continues to set records, becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in a match for Bayern, with the only younger player ever to do so in the Bundesliga being Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoka who did so back in 2022.

Karl is already the club’s youngest scorer in the Champions League and has two goals and two assists in nine matches this term. He looks like a genuine superstar of the future.

Marseille kept the pressure on PSG at the top of Ligue 1 overnight, demolishing Nice 5-1 as Mason Greenwood added another two goals to his tally.

The English striker leads the Golden Boot with 10 goals in 12 league matches so far this term and he was joined on the score sheet here by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Timothy Weah and Igor Paixao.

Roberto De Zerbi’s men sit second on the ladder, just two points behind PSG, who beat Le Havre 3-0 on Sunday morning AEDT, thanks to goals from Lee Kang-In, Joao Neves and Bradley Barcola.

The French giants aren’t due to face each other in the league again until February 9, with Marseille winning their first meeting 1-0 in September, PSG’s only loss this term.
