Four Downs: Iowa 20, Michigan State 17

Speaking of stepping up when needed.

Senior kicker, Drew Stevens has had an up-and-down final season in Iowa City. No better exemplified than his performance on Saturday.

Prior to the half, Iowa got a gift of an interception from redshirt-sophomore DB, Zach Lutmer, who grabbed a tip-drill interception with six second remaining at the Michigan State 43-yard line with six seconds remaining in the half. After a quick, eight-yard completion to Gill from Gronowski, to put the kick at the 35-yard line, Stevens was set up for a 53-yard field goal -- a distance that he often makes look routine.

He missed it wide left after making a practice attempt from the same distance, and Iowa went to half with a 7-3 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Stevens made a 26-yard field goal when an Iowa drive came up short, ending at the eight-yard line, making the score 17-10 after two second half passing touchdowns by the Spartans.

With the game still seemingly out of Iowa's reach following a punt by Rhys Dakin and a turnover on downs, the Hawkeyes were dug out of the hopeless pit by Wetjen and the play of Gronowski with less than three minutes to go.

After the completion of 29-yards to Vander Zee, Gronowski handed the ball off to Kamari Moulton to center the kick, and it was time for Stevens to give it a shot.

Like he's done before, like he did on senior day last year, Stevens stepped to the metaphorical plate and drilled a home run -- er, 42-yard field goal -- to give Iowa the 20-17 lead and the victory as time expired.

A senior kicking the game-winner, Stevens shared after the game that he missed a would-be game-tying kick on senior night at home his senior season of high school.

In poetic fashion, the fourth-year kicker exorcised the demons of his past miss, and the spirits that haunted the Iowa offense for 3.5 quarters.
