On the last day of the regular season, Cal Poly’s football team shined in front of its home fans and an ESPN+ television audience, snapping a six-game losing streak.
The Mustangs (4-8, 2-6 Big Sky Conference) beat Eastern Washington (5-7, 4-4 Big Sky Conference) by a score of 43-34 in the first start of the season for Anthony Grigsby Jr., the third quarterback of the season to start a game for Cal Poly.
Grigsby, a redshirt junior from Stockton, handled the job well in a high-scoring affair against the Eagles (5-7), completing 21-of-37 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions, to secure the victory in his first career start.
The Mustangs deployed an up-tempo offense to earn their second conference win and catch Eastern Washington off guard in key moments during the game.
Scoring included a 31-yard connection between Grigsby and Logan Booher on Cal Poly’s first offensive play of the contest, and the Mustangs quickly followed up with a bruising, short-yard touchdown run from big man Antonio Vakameilalo to take an early 14-0 lead. Booher led the Mustangs in receptions with seven catches for 126 yards.

But the Mustangs had to battle as the Eagles put up 24 first half points and trailed 28-24 after the first half.
Cal Poly used a balanced offensive arsenal to maintain the lead, however, fueled by a strong running game from junior power running back Tyrei Washington, who tallied 99 yards rushing and a touchdown; junior receiver Fidel Pitts and sophomore tight end Alex Marshall also hauled in scoring catches.
Cal Poly kept the Eagles at bay late in the game as junior linebacker Mikey D’Amato and sophomore safety Jeremiah Bernard secured late fourth quarter interceptions to end the Mustangs season on a high note. Sophomore linebacker Troy Bean recorded a first half interception as well.
The output marked Cal Poly’s second-highest scoring game of the season after a 56-7 win over Western Oregon on Sept. 13.
