Manchester United are above fierce rivals Liverpool in the Premier League despite having played one fewer game
Before the start of the season, it would have seemed quite fanciful to say Manchester United would be sat above reigning champions Liverpool in mid-November - but it is very much reality.
Ruben Amorim's side are level on points with the Reds but have played one game fewer as they prepare to host Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Their goal difference is better and United can end the next round of games in the top four if they beat the Toffees and results go their way on Sunday afternoon when Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are in action.
There has been marked improvement this season under Amorim despite a shaky start to the campaign.
Man Utd sign proven Premier League talent
Part of United's resurgence in recent months has been down to three of their summer signings. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have proven to be good additions while Senne Lammens has settled in nicely between the posts.
The Red Devils did not replace David de Gea smartly but they appear to have finally rectified that error as Lammens looks to be a smart addition. Benjamin Sesko has failed to really hit the ground running but the striker is still young and by no means a bad signing.
During the summer, United only wanted to spend big on proven Premier League stars. Sesko was the exception but Mbeumo and Cunha have hit the ground running at Old Trafford.
It was a big change in strategy from previous windows, when United went and spent big on players who had never played in the Premier League. Their transfer strategy was much smarter than Liverpool - who appear to have made the same mistakes that were almost characteristic of United in previous years.
Liverpool fail to learn from Man Utd mistakes
United look on course to finish above Liverpool this season and that has come down to transfer strategy. Liverpool did sign some players who have proven themselves in the Premier League but invested around £450m on a number of new signings.
Bar Hugo Ekitike, none have so far proven to be any sort of value for money.
The Red Devils know all too well that spending big on stars who do not fail to live up to their transfer fees can impact a club for years after. It becomes harder to sell them on for the price that was paid and if they are failing to deliver on the pitch, then revenue from prize money will also be limited.
With United and Liverpool both on 20 league titles, it appears the Red Devils are the ones who got it right in the summer as there seems no genuine threat of the Reds getting to 21 domestic crowns and overtaking United outright.
