“For sure” – Manager defends Chelsea’s attacking patterns and routes to goal

Chelsea got the job done against Burnley today, but it wasn’t always pretty. His team ground out a 2-0 victory, despite some dodgy periods.

The coach was asked whether his team had “consistent routes to goal,” on another day where their striker and number ten really failed to deliver much.

It might seem an odd question for a manager whose team scored two really nice goals – but there’s no denying that they really came from nowhere and were spontaneous moments from top players. The other 89 minutes of the game saw little consistent attacking threat from the Blues.

“We work on some patterns for sure. I said already since I joined the club that I prefer the five players at the front to score 10-12 goals each of them, than to have a striker that scores 40 goals,” the coach explained.

“For sure if you have a striker that scores 40 goals you are happy. But I like the wingers scoring goals, I like the wingers giving assists, like today Jamie, Enzo arrived inside the box, Malo [Gusto] the other day arrived inside the box, so we work on some patterns to also create chances with the attacking players.”

Let’s hope the return of Cole Palmer in a couple of weeks helps with all this.

Maresca was delighted by the win and his team’s current form, as you’d expect. But he also couldn’t resist returning to one of his favourite topics – teams playing a back four or a back five.

Liam Delap’s struggles in this game mean increasing pressure on Enzo Maresca to drop him, and the coach backed his forward to score a Premier League goal soon in the post-match presser.
