Several Manchester City and Newcastle United players were seen swapping shirts following Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

Newcastle United ended a run of 12 Premier League games without a win against Manchester City with a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Harvey Barnes scored twice either side of a Ruben Dias equaliser inside six frantic second-half minutes as The Magpies picked up a much-needed win.

While it ends a run of successive Premier League defeats for Eddie Howe’s side, it also marks six straight wins at St James’ Park in all competitions. Newcastle remained 14th in the table but are now four points clear of the relegation zone and four points off the potential Champions League places after 12 games.

Erling Haaland’s Newcastle United struggles continue

Saturday’s match marked Manchester City striker Erling Haaland’s sixth successive game against Newcastle without scoring.

While Man City rarely lose to Newcastle, Haaland has only ever found the net once against The Magpies. That goal came in his first-ever visit to St James’ Park back in 2023 as Newcastle drew 3-3 with Pep Guardiola’s side.

No Premier League side has stopped Haaland from scoring more than Newcastle. A solid feat up against a striker who already has 31 goals for club and country so far this season.

The efforts of Malick Thiaw and Fabian Schar at the heart of Newcastle’s defence were a big reason why the Norway international was kept so quiet at St James’ Park once again.

Thiaw in particular thwarted Haaland on several occasions during the match while Schar won some important headers against the 6ft 5in forward.

After the game, several Newcastle and City players swapped shirts. One Newcastle player was lucky to get his hands on Haaland’s shirt, or was it the other way around?

After the match, Haaland got his hands on a Newcastle shirt as he swapped jerseys with winger Jacob Murphy.

Whether it was Murphy or Haaland who instigated the shirt swap will remain a mystery. The Man City striker could be seen with the Newcastle winger’s shirt around his neck at full-time while Murphy was spotted with Haaland’s shirt as he made his way to the dressing room after the game.

Game recognises game after all.
