Liverpool have bene told they should try and sign Marc Guehi in January instead of Antoine Semenyo, which could give Manchester United the advantage in the race for his signature. Both United and the Merseyside outfit have been heavily linked with signing Semenyo in recent weeks ahead of the New Year.

United made five new signings in the summer transfer window with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon all moving to Old Trafford. Despite Ruben Amorim seeing plenty of investment in his forward options in the summer, United have been heavily linked with strengthening their squad in the New Year.

Semenyo is one player who has been linked with United, with Liverpool also being mentioned as a potential destination. Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Marc Guehi, having seen a £35million move fall through on deadline day.

During a talkSPORT debate this week, Sam Matterface quizzed Minto and Alex Crook about the possibility of Liverpool going into the market for Guehi rather than Semenyo in the New Year, reports the Mirror. "Because questions are being asked now," said Minto, in response. "Are they even going to finish in the top four? But lets see, he’s [Guehi] not just a short-term fix, he’s an £80million footballer.

"He's an £80million pound footballer that they could have got for £35million but for things going on elsewhere, and if they had put down £40m, £45m they probably would have got him straight away. And yet what do we think the problems are with Liverpool right now?"

Crook then replied: "I don't think Liverpool are in any kind of financial situation because they went for a couple of transfer windows didn't they?

"Didn't spend anything, and actually you look at their net spend which is what I was talking about.

"Their net spend in this summer transfer window was £218million pound less than Arsenal so I think they have got the funds."

Minto then explained: "So I would I would bring in Marc Guehi rather than Antoine Semenyo," which led to Crook asking: "Because Van Dijk and Konate have been vulnerable?”

Minto finished the debate by saying: "Absolutely."

Antoine Semenyo is reported to have a £65m release clause in his contract

If Liverpool were to pursue a deal for Guehi instead of Semenyo, it could be a welcome development for United.

The Reds had previously being linked with the Bournemouth star during the summer, before he ultimately decided to extend his contract with the Cherries until 2030.

Recent reports have suggested, though, that Bournemouth may struggle to stop other clubs from being interested in signing Semenyo, with his new contract reportedly includes a £65m release clause.

Despite strengthening their attack with the additions of Mbeumo and Sesko this summer, it remains to be seen if United will want to sign another new forward in January.
