Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has provided injury updates on Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier.

It was in the Magpies’ last European game, a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, that Gordon was forced off with a hip injury.

The 24-year-old missed the following game away to Brentford in the Premier League and pulled out of England duty for matches against Serbia and Albania.

Eddie Howe described Gordon as “touch and go” for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City and was ultimately left out of the matchday squad after following a late decision.

Newcastle United issue Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier update

Gordon was one of six players to miss out against Man City with Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Dan Burn dropping out of the squad from the defeat at Brentford before the international break.

Burn was serving a one-match suspension for his red card while Trippier and Krafth missed out through injury.

Howe has suggested Gordon could return for the Marseille game but admitted he was “unsure” on how he will be without Trippier.

“Yeah, Anthony's very close, just not quite ready for today but he's working hard and he'll be ready I think in the next few days,” Howe said. “Kieran, I'm unsure. I'm waiting for feedback from the medical team.”

Newcastle United have just welcomed back Tino Livramento

Trippier and Krafth’s absences come just as Tino Livramento returned from two months out with a knee injury. Livramento played a full game against Man City on his first appearance since being stretchered off against Arsenal in September.

The match also saw left-back Lewis Hall make his first start since September as Howe praised both his full-backs for their role in the victory.

Howe said: “I always say the team is formed by individuals. The individuals create the team and they've all got different attributes.

“So you saw today Lewis Hall's technical ability, considering again the length of time he's been out and he's one that hadn't trained with us so we hadn't really seen him during the international break. It was a great performance from him. He took the ball under pressure, linked really well with Harvey, ran forward when he was able to in that first half before his legs started to tire.

“And then you go to Tino, who had stayed with us and had done a lot of hard work. I thought physically he looked unbelievable today considering he's seven weeks out. And a really high level performance against a very dangerous opponent, so I did think they both played really well.”

Newcastle United remain without Yoane Wissa and Will Osula

The other two players to miss the Man City game were Yoane Wissa and Will Osula. When both players are expected to return is currently unclear.

Wissa joined from Brentford for £55m on September 1 but is yet to make his debut due a knee injury sustained on international duty with DR Congo. Osula, meanwhile, has been struggling with an ongoing ankle problem.
