Arne Slot is back to the drawing board after Liverpool’s ineffective performance against Nottingham Forest
Liverpool have little time to lick their wounds following another dismal result in the Premier League, as European football returns in the week.
The Reds are back in Champions League action on Wednesday and they will be looking to take inspiration from their wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid, rather than their miserable run of form in England.
Liverpool were hammered 3-0 at home by Nottingham Forest on Saturday, suffering their sixth defeat in seven league games. It was an all-round disappointing display from the champions, whose hopes of defending their title have all but totally disappeared.
It seems Arne Slot still hasn’t settled on his best starting 11 yet either. The manager made five changes from the side that lost to Manchester City, with Alisson returning between the sticks and Dominik Szoboszlai once again filling in at right-back.
‘Non-existent’ Liverpool player struggles again vs Nottingham Forest
It was a performance of very few positives for Liverpool, as relegation candidates Nottingham Forest earned a huge three points.
The Reds registered 20 shots in total against the East Midlands side but could only muster up three on target. Alexander Isak was not one of the players who hit the target. In fact, he struggled to have any sort of impact on the match at all.
Isak also claimed an unwanted record, as he became the first Liverpool player to lose all four of his first top-flight league starts since Percy Saul in October 1906, according to Opta statistician Michael Reid.
During Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show, Michael Dawson described Isak as ‘non-existent’ against Forest.
As his troublesome performances continue, Slot can’t afford to keep taking a gambling on an out-of-form striker, while Hugo Ekitike is waiting in the wings and has already proven he is capable of big performances.
Alexander Isak Liverpool attacking woes continue
Isak must take a backseat when the Reds face PSV on Wednesday. Despite now being well into the first half of the season, the British record signing does not look anything like the superstar striker Liverpool were hellbent on signing after his superb season with Newcastle United.
Isak’s blank against Forest sees him continue his Premier League goal-scoring drought. The Swede is still yet to open his account in the league and has managed to record just one goal in red so far, which came in the Carabao Cup against Southampton.
Isak was slowly introduced to his new side due to lack of pre-season with Newcastle but he is still struggling to show the full potential the world has grown accustomed to seeing. While Slot figures out what’s going wrong, he can’t afford to keep risking starting the Swede and getting no result until he rediscovers his form.
