Nottingham Forest hand Slot new reason to hate them as Liverpool boss fails to learn key lesson - opinion

Arne Slot still cannot get the better of Nottingham Forest.

Things keep going from bad to worse for the Reds as their 3-0 defeat on Saturday was one of their worst performances of the season so far.

They hardly laid a glove on Forest and were overrun in all areas of the pitch, with this the third time Slot’s side has faced them, with the Dutchman still yet to be on the winning side.

This result leaves them in the bottom half of the table and on a run of eight losses in 11 games, a simply terrible record for the reigning Premier League champions.

There is another reason why this result will sting more than the rest, though, with Slot clearly not learning his lesson.

Arne Slot did not learn from mistakes vs Nottingham Forest last season

Slot’s first season in England could not have gone much better, with wins coming easily for them en route to the title.

However, there is one game that stood out in the season for all the wrong reasons, with this being Nottingham Forest at Anfield back in September, 2024.

This was the first match they lost under Slot and it was actually the only league game they failed to score in all season, and the Liverpool boss never let it go.

Game after game, he seemed to bring up how annoyed he was at that result, with it clearly bugging him as to how poor they were.

However, he clearly did not learn his lesson as the game this time around was played out in a similar fashion to this 1-0 defeat last year.

Liverpool had more shots and dominated possession once again, this time having 75% of the ball, which, of course, meant they made a lot more passes than Forest.

Forest’s resolute defence kept them at bay, though, and Liverpool could not get through, with their counter-attack style catching them out yet again.

Liverpool need to adapt the way they play

There seems to be a common theme this season with Liverpool and it is that when a team deploys anything close to a low block, they cannot break them down.

Everyone seems to be clocking onto this too and using this tactic against them, and it works every time.

Slot needs to work out how to change this as they have the quality of players needed to find a solution, but nothing seems to be working yet.

They need to be more aware of the counter-attacking threat as well as they are too brittle, with everything falling apart once they concede.
