Why Arne Slot didn’t start Joe Gomez against Nottingham Forest despite double injury blow

The English right-back was again overlooked by Arne Slot, as he faces another season of limited gametime.

Nottingham Forest cruised to victory on Saturday evening against a Liverpool side who looked deflated and remarkably low on confidence.

Certain injuries to the starting lneup hasn’t helped, as any team in a rut like Liverpool’s would ideally be hoping for a more consistent teamsheet.

But, Arne Slot finds himself in what is a right-back crisis at the minute.

Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid this summer, leading to the Reds snapping up Bayer Leverkusen player Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong has struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League and has been injured for more games than he has featured in.

He remains out, and now the latest addition to the sidelines is Conor Bradley.

As a result, Slot looked to Dominik Szoboszlai to play in that position.

The Hungarian has filled in well there at times, but it isn’t his natural position, and the team misses out on a lot when he isn’t pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch.

His engine and work rate is vital to Liverpool winning the battles in transition.

Despite the lack of options, Arne Slot still doesn’t play Joe Gomez, who has shown many times during his time at the club that his more than capable of fillinf in across the backline.

However, in his post-match press conference last night, Arne Slot cleared up the reason behind Joe Gomez not starting.

“We had to start the game with a midfielder at right full-back because both of our full-backs are injured.”

“Joe Gomez is also a player who can play there but hasn’t trained the whole week.”

“I don’t think he was fully ready to start this game.”

Ibrahima Konate was a standout weak link in the defeat to Nottingham Forest, and if Slot can get Gomez up to speed, he could be the solution to solidifying that backline.
