Manchester United player Matheus Cunha was involved in “an accident in training” as his club ramped up preparations for the game with Everton.

Details of the incident, and any consequences for the 26-year-old, are limited but “medical reasons” were cited as the reason he could not attend a Christmas lights switch-on last night.

Cunha was the headline act for Altrincham’s festive launch party, where he was due to turn the lights on with Sam Aston, the Dancing on Ice winner who rose to fame as Chesney in Coronation Street.

The action unfolded without Cunha, the Brazil international once courted by the Blues, however. The Instagram page Altrincham Today explained: "Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons."

What the incident will mean for Cunha’s availability at Old Trafford on Monday night is unclear but will now impact the build up for both teams.

Everton held solid interest in the player under Frank Lampard three years ago, only for Wolves to swoop for the Atletico Madrid star. He tormented Everton in the 3-0 December defeat at Molineux under Sean Dyche. Since signing for Man United in the summer, he has scored once in 10 Premier League matches.
