Seahawks cornerback goes from afterthought to hero at best possible time

The Seattle Seahawks, as expected, have one of the better defenses in the NFL. When mostly healthy, the team can affect what any opponent wants to do offensively. Just ask the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford, who struggled after some early-game success in Week 11.

One reason that head coach Mike Macdonald's unit has been so impressive is that several castoffs from other teams have been a great fit in the scheme. The Dallas Cowboys, for instance, chose not to re-sign edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence this offseason, and he's been terrific for Seattle.

Another castoff is cornerback Josh Jobe. The Alabama product spent the first two seasons of his career, after going undrafted out of college in 2022, with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was used more on special teams on defense, though, and Philly released Jobe in late August 2024, and two days later, the Seahawks picked him up.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe having a terrific season (again)

Clearly, general manager John Schneider liked Jobe from afar before the corner ever came to Seattle. As soon as he became available, the Seahawks scooped him up.

Last season, Jobe proved to be a talented and valued member of the secondary about halfway through the season. Riq Woolen was struggling a bit, and Jobe got some of his reps. Jobe started six games, allowed just 56 percent of his targets to be completed, and gave up just one touchdown.

This season, when healthy (Jobe missed one game with a concussion), he's been even better. Only 47.5 percent of his targets have been completed. And proving that Pro Football Focus's (subscription required) grades are strange at times, PFF has given Jobe a mediocre coverage grade this season while also listing him as the third-best "lockdown" cornerback this season.

Besides the silly grade, his raw statistics are excellent. His quarterback rating allowed is a very good 67.9; he has been terrific with 10 run-stuffs, has given up one touchdown, but has an interception and has four passes broken up while playing mostly outside cornerback.

Some players simply need to find the right scheme that allows their talents to translate to high-level production. Josh Jobe has found that in Mike Macdonald's scheme with the Seattle Seahawks. It's also a perfect time for him to be great, as he will be an unrestricted free agent in the 2026 offseason. At this point, Seattle definitely needs to bring Jobe back, maybe instead of Riq Woolen.
