Habitat’s Holiday Home Build is now in its third year of providing affordable houses on the Gulf Coast.
While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers chase a berth in the NFL playoffs this year, the franchise and players pitched in to help provide housing for the needy along the Gulf Coast.
Several Buccaneer officials and players put on hard hats and took part in building two new affordable homes as part of Habitat for Humanity of Tampa Bay Hillsborough. It’s all part of Habitat’s Holiday Home Build with the Bucs. It’s the third year of the charitable effort.
Rookie cornerbacks for the Bucs Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish were the first members of the Bucs roster to take part in the building project Tuesday morning. In the afternoon, Bucs defensive lineman CJ Brewer and offensive linemen Lorenz Mets joined in helping on the construction aspects. Those players were eventually joined by Bucs safety Rashad Wisdom and tight end Devin Culp who continued building well into the afternoon.
But the construction on the two homes wasn’t limited to just the on-field heroes for the Bucs. Buccaneer staff members who also threw their sweat equity into the project included several members of the Player Community Impact Board and the season ticket holder group known as the Krewe and some of the people who would go on to own the homes that were under construction.
Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to draw on community contributions to help construct and finance homes for those who might not be able to afford a home otherwise by covering much of the cost of the construction and providing affordable mortgage payments.
“Tampa Bay’s team has always believed deeply in our community,” said Kourtney Sanchez, Chief Impact Officer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “We’re proud to partner with Habitat of Tampa Bay Hillsborough to make a real and lasting impact for these families who deserve safe, stable homes.”
The new homes are part of the Windhorst Commons community in Brandon, a Habitat neighborhood with 23 hurricane-resilient homes.
There have been more than 650 affordable homes built and renovated by the Habitat for Humanity of Tampa Bay Hillsborough since 1987.
