Entering his sixth year with the San Antonio Spurs, the expectations were high for Devin Vassell. Without any additions at small forward over the offseason, [we're looking at you, Kevin Durant](https://airalamo.com/spurs-failed-star-trade-looks-more-regretful-after-avalanche-injuries); the Spurs were left with Vassell as their lone option at the position.
Vassell has had a very up-and-down career thus far. Over his first few seasons, the youngster looked like a future cornerstone of the franchise. But as time wore on, expected progression began to halt. After his 2024-25 campaign was riddled with injuries, many expected a big bounce-back season this year. Thus far, Devin has failed to live up to the hype.
The shot has not been falling for Vassell
-----------------------------------------
In a year where the Spurs desperately need a strong perimeter shooter, Devin Vassell has not delivered. His shooting stroke, which many anticipated would improve as opportunities opened up, has suffered dramatically.
Vassell is shooting the second-worst mark of his career in overall shooting efficiency, coming in towards the bottom of the league at 49.7%. This number is not acceptable. To make matters worse, the failed shooter is only making 31% of his corner threes this season and shooting a far below average 60% around the rim. These are supposed to be the easy shots.
It's not like he is incapable of producing either. His shooting efficiency has been closer to the league average in previous seasons, and he has shown himself capable of scoring 18-19 points per night. Something is clearly off. With an improved surrounding cast, one would have expected his numbers to increase. The reality has been the opposite.
Devin Vassell's future with the Spurs is in jeopardy
----------------------------------------------------
The clock is ticking for Vassell. As the Spurs have launched themselves into contention this season, the margin for error has shrunk dramatically. As head coach Mitch Johnson's rotation tightens, Vassell may fall victim. His play thus far this season does not warrant starting minutes. Frankly, he is lucky the Spurs don't have many options in relief.
As we approach the trade deadline, don't be surprised if Vassell's name [comes up as a trade candidate](https://airalamo.com/spurs-have-obvious-devin-vassell-decision-make-this-season). While his value across the league certainly isn't too high, given his play to begin the season, a lost team may consider giving him a chance in a new situation. Or, the Spurs could use his huge contract as a piece in a larger deal.
If the Spurs find a way to upgrade at small forward, Vassell's days as a Spur will be over. For now, Mitch Johnson will be stuck having to watch Vassell brick shots for the foreseeable future.
In an optimistic view, the 25-year-old may be on a terrible cold streak that he could soon recover from. The Spurs are certainly hoping that is the case. But, as it stands, Vassell is on the chopping block barring a drastic change.
