For years, the Kansas City Chiefs were the team to beat in the National Football League. Now, they’re treading water and trying to play catch-up.

Andy Reid’s team is sitting on a 5-5 record and riding a two-game losing streak. To add insult to injury, things aren’t going to get any easier for them going forward.

As pointed out by ESPN insider Adam Schefter on X, the Chiefs aren’t a playoff team right now. More than that, they may have to enter playoff mode right now:

“At 5-5, the Chiefs currently are out of the AFC playoffs. This season, they’re 0–4 against teams that would be in the playoff field today, with losses to the Broncos, Chargers, Bills and Jaguars. Today the Chiefs face the Colts, the AFC’s current No. 3 seed, and the Texans in Week 14, who are also ahead of KC. With seven games remaining, some of these upcoming matchups could have significant head-to-head implications,” Schefter posted on X.

This team has been there and done that way too many times in the past, and it’s still early to give up on them. That being said, they desperately need to straighten the course of the ship. There’s no margin for error, especially now that the Denver Broncos will probably run away with the AFC West.

The Chiefs have struggled in one-score games this season. That was a situation they usually thrived in.

Maybe Father Time has finally caught up to them, or they ran out of luck. Maybe other teams finally figured them out. Maybe it’s the perfect storm and the combination of all of those things.

Whatever the case, the fact is that the playoffs have started earlier this season for the dynasty. They will have to approach every single game as the Super Bowl from now on. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be pretty, but if history has taught us something, it is to never count Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes out.
