Mike Tomlin confirmed Aaron Rodgers is out and Mason Rudolph will start for the Steelers vs. the Chicago Bears. The game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. EST. Rudolph took over last week and gives Pittsburgh a steady option if Rodgers’ left wrist keeps him sidelined for Sunday’s matchup at Soldier Field.
What made Rodgers questionable, and Rudolph’s case
Rodgers suffered a fractured left wrist late in the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals. He took a hit from Joseph Ossai and left the game after one more play. Rodgers finished that day completing nine of 15 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.

No surgery was needed, but the injury affects protection and function. He was limited in practice and wore a brace. Coach Mike Tomlin said the final call would be a “medical decision.” Tomlin added, “I thought I saw a solid effort, but it’s Friday, so we still got some time…We’ll see where the weekend leads us.”

If Rodgers can’t go, Mason Rudolph will start. Rudolph relieved last week and completed 12 of 16 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, earning a 118.5 passer rating in relief. He has shown he can manage the offense and keep drives moving. In 2023 he stepped in late and completed 53 of 71 passes for 716 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Steelers win three straight and reach the playoffs. Rudolph returned to Pittsburgh after a 2024 season elsewhere and now has another chance to start.

The Steelers also have Will Howard available as a backup. The staff will weigh Rodgers’ long-term health against the desire to play Soldier Field. If Rodgers sits, Rudolph gives the team a steady option and a realistic path to maintain momentum this week. Tomlin will make the final call after pregame medical checks today.
