Although many – including Arne Slot himself – hoped that it would be a memorable occasion, the Dutchman's 50th Premier League match in charge of Liverpool ended in dismal fashion: a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest. The start of the 2025/26 season has not been kind to the title-defending Merseysiders, who now reside in the bottom half of the table. But how do his first 50 league outings compare to some of the greats?
Spending north of £400 million, in the eyes of many, had all but guaranteed that Slot and his entourage would go on to taste Premier League glory for the second campaign on the bounce, but Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Milos Kerkez have all flattered to deceive since signing.
Much of the blame has been on the shoulders of Slot, though, as his side have lost any semblance of looking like a team who are capable of challenging for honours. The Dutchman, 47, has been happy to front and admit any – and all! – of his poorly-made decisions since the season started in August, but how have his first half-century of Premier League matches panned out?

Arne Slot's Premier League triumph already makes him one of the greatest Dutch managers the English top-flight has ever seen.
How Does Slot's Record Compare to Jurgen Klopp?
He may have become the fifth manager in history to win the Premier League title in their debut campaign, but Slot has plenty of work to do if he is to be remembered in a similar breath to Jurgen Klopp, a manager who moved to Merseyside from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2015. In doing so, he completely changed the course of Liverpool's exploits – not just from a football perspective, but culturally too.
Although he won the Premier League in 2019/20 and the Champions League the campaign prior, it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows during Klopp's reign at Anfield.
Particularly, in his first 50 Premier League matches at the helm, the 58-year-old – widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in the history of the Premier League – won just over half of them (26) and racked up 92 points with a team which included the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Lucas Leiva and Divock Origi.
Elsewhere, Klopp drew 14 times and lost 10 of those matches. Simon Mignolet, who played between the sticks in the infancy of Klopp's Liverpool spell, kept 14 clean sheets in his opening 50 matches and conceded 63 goals. Going the other way, Klopp's men scored 103 times.
Jurgen Klopp after West Ham vs Liverpool
Compared to Slot, though, Klopp's record is unfavourable. Saturday’s loss was only the 10th time the current Reds custodian has tasted defeat in the Premier League, and six of those have come in this season’s opening 12 games as he's transitioned from being deemed untouchable to under serious pressure.
In his maiden 50 outings in England's top flight, though, his side – spearheaded by the talismanic Mohamed Salah – have scored 104 goals (one more than Klopp's men) and conceded 61. Overall, they've kept 16 clean sheets and chalked up 102 points. The full comparison between Liverpool's two recent managers is below.

Slot's Record Compared to Arteta, Guardiola, Ferguson
Arne Slot
Slot, despite his side's recent slump in performances and results, may have a better record in his first 50 matches compared to Klopp – but how does he fare in comparison to Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and Sir Alex Ferguson? Starting with the former, and you can probably guess how the Spaniard's embryonic stages played out.
Arriving to the English top flight with a stellar reputation, his Manchester City side have fired on all cylinders from his arrival to the present day – and that was the case even before he was settled in and able to fully work his magic. He lost just six times (four fewer than Slot), while he also picked up an eye-catching 112 points.
It's no surprise to see Guardiola, admired for his tactical expertise, head and shoulder above the Dutchman. His side scored 119 goals and conceded just 46 times in his first half-century of matches in the Premier League. And there's only one man who can rival him: Ferguson.
Between his appointment in 1986 and when he retired in 2013, the stubborn Scot built a dynasty at Old Trafford. Ferguson, who won the Premier League title on a record 13 occasions with Manchester United, was in the hotseat as the top flight transitioned in 1992 – and his first 50 matches since the restructuring resulted in 30 wins, 13 draws and seven losses. They picked up 103 points in the process.
Arteta, 43, may be one of the best managers in world football right now, but that hasn't always been the case. His style of play – and lack of results – during the beginning of his manaterial tenure frustrated supporters, and that's evidenced by his points tally of 75 from his first 50 Premier League matches in charge. That's 27 fewer than Slot.

At that point, he wasn't able to rely on the brilliance of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes to get points on the board and, all in all, he won 21 times, picked up a draw on 12 occasions and faced the prospect of losing 17 times. His Arsenal side scored 72 goals and conceded 56 as they struggled. Things have since turned around, mind.
