A potential late Man United injury doubt has emerged ahead of the Everton game on Monday
A fresh injury concern has been raised ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Everton on Monday, as a key player’s availability has been cast into doubt.
Following a statement from an unexpected source, it is uncertain whether Matheus Cunha will be fit to take part in the upcoming Old Trafford clash.
Is Matheus Cunha injured for Man United?
Cunha, who has established himself as a regular under Ruben Amorim following his arrival from Wolves, could be at risk of missing the Everton game on Monday.
The Brazil international had been booked in to turn on the Christmas lights in Altrincham on Saturday. Christmas light switch-on events are typically organised to mark the start of the festive season in towns and cities, and often involve famous faces linked with the area to add an extra buzz to the occasion.
Cunha was due to attend the event alongside actor Sam Aston, who plays Chesney in Coronation Street. However, just hours before the switch-on, event organisers Visit Altrincham confirmed the Man United forward would not be present.
In a statement on social media, Visit Altrincham wrote: “Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons.”
United have not yet followed up with confirmation or further details of their own, and it remains to be seen whether this will impact Cunha’s availability against Everton on Monday.
BBC Sport reports that club sources ‘later privately played down’ fears Cunha could be absent long-term. They reportedly confirmed the forward had ‘suffered a knock’ in training but it was viewed as a minor incident. His appearance at the Altrincham Christmas light switch-on was not arranged through Man United.
Man United injury news ahead of Everton
With a big question mark hanging over Cunha’s availability, fans will need to either wait for further details from the club, or for a glimpse of the Brazilian at Old Trafford.
Both players suffered their injuries before the international break and have not been deemed ready to return against Everton.
“He is going to stay a few weeks out. I don't know how long but it is not that serious,” Amorim said of Sesko. “We have to be careful with him. He is going to recover. He is doing the recovery and he is feeling better so we expect in a few weeks to have him back.”
Maguire’s potential return date is unknown but Kobbie Mainoo, who did not feature against Tottenham Hotspur before the break, could be back in contention.
Lisandro Martinez is also nearing a return to the pitch, with Amorim confirming he is ‘close’ to being available to play again after recovering from an ACL injury.
