Eberechi Eze bagged the second first half goal for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Frank set up his Spurs side to try and frustrate the hosts, who themselves are looking to bounce back from dropping points against Sunderland before the international break. It didn’t take long for the Gunners to break down the Spurs formation, Trossard finishing after an inspired Mikel Merino pass in the 36th minute.
Mikel Arteta’s side continued to press and Eze, who almost joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer, rubbed salt in those wounds with a nifty piece of work with the ball and a finish.
Les Ferdinand slams decision to allow Eze goal against Tottenham Hotspur
There were few questions about the legitimacy of the goal raised in the moment but replays did show that Arsenal players stood in an offside position could be blocking the view of Spurs shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario.
Speaking on Sky Sports at half time, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Les Ferdinand said: “I’m still unhappy with him scoring. We talked about him not doing enough and that he has so much more to go - he finds himself in there and takes it inside. He has so much space on the edge of the box and wriggles through it, has a good shot.
“I don’t understand how this doesn’t affect the goalkeeper’s sight. I don’t understand it. Look at this. I don’t understand how that’s not looked at and seen that these players are blocking the goalkeeper’s view. I really don’t.”
Vicario could be seen trying to gesture that his view had been blocked after the ball hit the net and even Arsenal legend Thierry Henry agreed with Ferdinand’s frustration at the break.
Arsenal star opens up on Spurs transfer links
It took Eze just one minute to find a second in the match following the break, picking the ball up in a similar position on the edge of the box and lashing home past Vicario.
Arsenal paid £67.5 million to bring Eze to the Emirates Stadium from Crystal Palace this summer, striking that deal just as it appeared that the England international would be on his way to the North London rivals.
Speaking about that transfer last month, Eze said: “I was prepared to go to Tottenham, but from the moment Arsenal came, it was always going to be them. My first [senior] Arsenal game was special. It almost didn’t feel real because it’s something I’ve been dreaming of for a long time. Playing for Arsenal from eight to 13, it’s been in the back of my mind wanting to go back. It felt like the realisation of a dream.”
