Enzo Maresca praises 'very good' Andrey Santos display

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his delight with Andrey Santos' performance in the West London outfit's 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday lunchtime.

A nervy performance for the Blues that was eventually stabilised by an Enzo Fernández goal, Santos was certainly the brightest spark of the lot for Maresca, who showered the Brazilian with praise in his post-match press conference.

Winning 70% of all of his duels and registering a passing accuracy of 81%, this was a performance that saw Santos receive the player of the match award at Turf Moor.

What this game did allow Maresca to see was the Brazilian in a more natural position. When he has started for Chelsea, Santos has often operated in a more advanced midfield role, as Caicedo operates in the classic 6 role. The Italian was very pleased with Santos' display in this role.

"Yeah, it was very good. Andrey's position is the position that he played today.

"With us, most of the time he plays a little bit higher, a little bit in the pocket, but it's because in that position we have Moises, so we try to find solutions, space for Andrey, but we are aware and we know that Andrey's position is the position that he played today.

"It was very good."

Covering in the position of Moises Caicedo is no easy feat, to say the least, as the Ecuadorian has made himself a key pillar in Chelsea's squad and how they operate.

Despite this, Santos proved to be a fantastic back-up option as Caicedo received a much-needed rest as Chelsea head into a potentially season-defining week.

Players like Santos help to evidence the strength of Chelsea's squad depth, who could afford to rest multiple key players at Turf Moor without suffering a poor result.

Chelsea now approach arguably the biggest week of the season with big encounters awaiting them both domestically and continentally as they face Arsenal and Barcelona, respectively.
