Newcastle United's new predicted final Premier League finish after brilliant Man City win

Newcastle United - what is success this season?

Newcastle United produced a brilliant performance to see off Premier League rivals Manchester City at St James Park.

St James Park was rocking to its foundations on Saturday evening as Newcastle United racked up an all-too-rare win against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The Magpies were at their intense best as Pep Guardiola’s side were put to the sword at Gallowgate for only the second time in a league game since 2006. Harvey Barnes was United’s match-winner as the former Leicester City winger seized the opportunity handed to him by an injury suffered by Anthony Gordon with a two-goal display that helped Eddie Howe’s men bounce back from successive defeats against Brentford and West Ham United.

Barnes opened the scoring just after the hour-mark as he linked up with Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes before sending a powerful effort beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma. Ruben Dias got the visitors back on level-terms within five minutes but Newcastle would not be denied and Barnes helped land all three points for his side with a clever finish just two minutes after City’s equaliser.

United held on secured a sixth consecutive win at St James Park as they now turn their attention towards Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Marseille - but the win has also raised hopes the Magpies can push up the Premier League table and move on from what has been a poor run of form in the league.

But where are Howe’s side predicted to finish in this season’s Premier League? We take a look at the latest predicted final table provided by the football stats experts at Opta.

The Magpies boss said: "It's been a long wait for a win against Pep (Guardiola). He's an incredible manager. We're just delighted to win tonight. The heart, the endeavour, the attitude of the group pleased me today. Compared to the game against Brentford, where we looked tired, that was a big upturn. Very very pleased - it should give us a big lift in a tough Premier League season. The challenge now is to keep it up. We have two huge games against Marseille and Everton now. We need to have the identity we played with today."
