Liverpool could be given a boost in the pursuit of Marc Guehi, with Crystal Palace considering selling the defender in January.
According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace could consider the prospect of selling key defender and captain Marc Guehi in January. The news might come as a boost for suitors such as Liverpool, who need a new centre-back, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also remain in pursuit.
Crystal Palace have a key decision on their hands with regards to Marc Guehi’s future. The defender was extremely close to leaving the South London club and joining Liverpool on deadline day before the Eagles pulled the plug on a transfer widely reported as agreed between the two clubs.
Crystal Palace feel Liverpool will come back for Guehi in January, although the situation is far more complex with the 25-year-old compared to how it was in the summer. Guehi is in no rush to decide his future, and all the signs have indicated he could leave Selhurst Park as a free agent next summer when his deal expires.
However, the Eagles could feel they might miss out on a decent transfer fee if they let him run down his contract, which has opened speculation over a potential January sale. They have already identified Ousmane Diomande as a target for January, and should the Sporting CP defender arrive, the doors might open for Guehi to leave.
Bayern Munich are also keen, and so are Real Madrid, with the two European giants eager to land the defender on a free transfer. They could be alerted to the prospect of signing him on a cut-price deal if Palace are to rush with a January sale.
Oliver Glasner may not approve of a winter sale
Oliver Glasner reportedly played a huge role in keeping Guehi after the club failed to sign a notable replacement back in the summer. The Austrian tactician does not want to lose his influential captain midway through the campaign, especially as Crystal Palace are doing so well in the league and the Conference League.
Liverpool could push to get a deal in place, although the ultimate decision will be Marc Guehi’s with regard to his immediate future. For now, the defender might lean towards staying and finishing the season with Crystal Palace, so as to have his pick of clubs in the summer as a free agent.
