DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions didn’t lead until the first play of overtime against the New York Giants.
But they still found a way to win, 34-27, on Sunday. It took a herculean effort from Jahmyr Gibbs and a career-long field goal from Jake Bates to get them there, but they’ll take it.
Gibbs took the first play of overtime 69 yards for the game-winning score. Bates nailed a 59-yard field goal to even get them to overtime after trailing every step of the way.
Detroit wasn’t at its best, not even close. But they found a way to keep their streak alive with a win after a loss, extending it to 14 games.
#### **Here are some notable quotes from the Lions and Giants players and coaches:**
**Lions HC Dan Campbell, on what this kind of win can do for them:** “You never know what these can do. Sometimes, it’s just important to remind yourself what we’re all capable of, even when the chips are down and things get hard. You don’t ever forget how to dig in one more time and find a way to lean on each other and do your job. And anytime you can get a win like this, it’s a good thing. It’s a good thing. Because that very easily, a number of times could have gone the other way, and we all know it. But it didn’t, it didn’t. We made the plays we had to make.”
**Campbell, on why he had to call his final timeout after spiking the ball:** “Yeah, so, the headset, communication, I don’t know what happened with that, to be honest with you. I just knew I couldn’t get to (Jared Goff) him. So I don’t know if something happened, I don’t know. The procedure of what goes on for me, from me to him. Yeah, it was just one of those oddball, weird deals, where thank God it didn’t cost us, to where I can to use it.”
**Lions OG Tate Ratledge, on watching Bates’ 59-yard field goal:** “I thought he missed it. It started off -- I’ve never seen a football do that. It started off right, and I was like, “Oh (expletive), here we go.” And then the Giants are celebrating, and I’m kind of like, walk off the field. I kind of looked back up and saw it peel back in. I was like, ‘What in the world?’"
**Giants interim coach Mike Kafka on Jahmyr Gibbs’ game-winning TD:** “He’s a good player. We knew he was going to get in some space, and they were going to give him some opportunities, and we had to figure out a way to rally him up. That one, he got us.”
**Goff, on what Gibbs means to this offense:** “Man, that dude is as good as they come in our league, and he’s making his claim across our league as one of the best players, regardless of position, and we are lucky to have him, man. He’s so electric. For him to be able to do that to supplement some of the struggles we were having was awesome.”
**Giants WR Wan’Dale Robinson on the Giants’ fifth loss in a game with a double-digit lead, tying an NFL record:** “I feel like I’m in a movie sometimes with it. It’s just not believable sometimes, you know. A lot of movies are fake. It just feels like it just can’t be real. But obviously we’re living in reality.”
**Bates, on his 59-yard field goal to send the game to overtime:** “As far as like the distance, I didn’t really know where I was at until I was lining up on the field. So, I didn’t go out to the field knowing how far it was. But I mean, that’s where kind of preparation comes into play, and just don’t let it change anything. You let it change a lot, you’re probably going to miss it. So, just try to hit every ball the same, and luckily that one went in.”
**Goff, on Gibbs’ 11 catches in the win:** “We had some more stuff in for him that we didn’t get to today. He’s doing a great job learning these routes, getting better at these routes. His hands are as good as they need to be. He does a great job out of the backfield. I probably went to him a couple too many times, honestly, on some of those balls to the sideline, but sometimes you are playing quarterback, you’re trying to be a point guard, and he’s the hot hand. If I’m in between, just kind of give it to him. Again, probably one too many times.”
**Kafka, on his decision to go for it on fourth down late in the game:** “Yeah, we did want to be aggressive. Just thought it was a good time to take points in that situation. Go up two scores and just hit a good flow. Wanted to just go up two scores.”
**Giants WR Gunner Olszewski, on what he was thinking after his trick-play touchdown pass:** “I was like, ‘Holy cow, I just threw a touchdown pass to Jameis Winston.’”
**Lions LB Jack Campbell, on if this is when they should be playing their best:** “At this point in the year, we’re going to be playing our best football — middle, end of November, going into December, January. This is the time where we make that push, and it’s one game at a time. So we found a way. Hats off to us about that, but we’re just focused on the next one.”
**Lions CB Amik Robertson, on Winston’s performance:** “He’s played in this league a long time. Smart. Like I said, man, I don’t have anything bad to say. Like I said, man, that team fought, man. They fought, man. Hats off to them, bro. They fought, but we were the team that was able to fight harder at the end. Appreciate that.”
**Goff, on the preparation when heading into Thanksgiving on the short week:** “Yeah, you start watching it tonight. As soon as you get home, get to work. I think our coaches are probably on their way to the facility to get to work themselves. We’re used to the tradition of this. We’ve played Green Bay in this game before, so we have some familiarity with it, too. Division game, at our place, Thanksgiving, everything you want. They’re a great team and we’ll be ready.”
