LAMBEAU FIELD, Wis. (WBAY) - Sunday marked 10 years since the NFL started the “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative, giving players a bigger platform to bring more awareness to various causes and non-profit organizations that they’re passionate about.
Action 2 News spoke to fans and got the reviews for these specially designed shoes, and they’re glowing.
“I really like those white ones with the green, blue highlight, and then the white toe. Those are really sharp,” said Noah Giese of Sturgeon Bay.
“The blue Nike ones are pretty cool. But also the purple ones,” said Bria Rubo of Eagle River.
Over 50 players and staff hand-picked a cause to support, like Christian Watson repping an American Breast Cancer Foundation design and Jordan Love stepping out in Bakersfield Police Activities League cleats.
The initiative gives players a way to do their part on and off the field. All while showing that they’re more than just football icons.
“It’s good to kinda get to know the personal side of these guys, cause within their cause, they highlight causes that affect their family and affect them, maybe affect their kids. It’s just an amazing opportunity for them to showcase on a bigger stage and also bring awareness to these causes that may go under the radar,” says Nathanael Washington, a player alumni specialist with the Packers.
The fans feel that, especially when it comes from someone who is seemingly larger than life.
“Bringing awareness to all different causes is amazing, and I think the platform that professional athletes all have is amazing. And I think you should use that to talk and raise money and raise awareness, and so I’m really proud of them. I think that’s an amazing cause,” said Rubo.
“I think it’s good. Especially these players are such a big figure and a personality for this community. Even if it’s in-state or wherever they went to high school or college, if they’re still committed to that cause that they feel close to. It’s a good thing for sure,” says Giese.
The cleats will also be worn next week against the Lions on Thanksgiving. Then they’ll go up for auction to help raise money for the non-profit their representing.
