With three more sacks in this game, Garrett now has 18 on the season. That gives him the single season record for the franchise. He did it in 11 games. He needs five to secure the NFL record for sacks in a season in the next six games.
He'll need to hit the mark in the next five to get Michael Strahan, who did it in a 16-game season. Garrett will face the 49ers, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills and then wrap up with rematches against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. Given his pace, it's difficult to bet against him.
Garrett's individual ability is more than enough reason to believe he can break the record, but it's the play of his teammates, the overall defensive product that has him on such a tear, including 13 sacks just in the past four games.
Garrett's final sack, he just destroyed the backup left tackle, Stone Forsythe on his way to recording his second sack fumble on the game. Otherwise, it was a feeding frenzy, often difficult to be sure who should get credit on most of the sacks.
Throughout the game, the box score was constantly changing as statisticians worked to properly dole out credit. In the end, Maliek Collins was credited with 2.5, giving him 6.5 on the season. That surpasses his season-high total of five, which he's done three separate times including each of the last two years.
