Raiders suddenly fire coach

The Las Vegas Raiders are in the midst of quite a disappointing season, and it sounds like the team has fired one of their coaches as a result.

The Raiders entered the season with high hopes after bringing in new head coach Pete Carroll and reuniting him with his former starting quarterback Geno Smith. However, things did not work out well for the Raiders this season, especially on offense.

After a loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon in which the offense struggled yet again, the Raiders decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.

“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” Carroll said in a press release on Sunday. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”

The Raiders brought in Kelly during the offseason after he helped lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship at the college level as the team’s offensive coordinator under head coach Ryan Day. Kelly was the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL, making a reported $6 million per year.

Kelly has a long history in the NFL at both the college and the NFL level, serving as a head coach of the Oregon Ducks before jumping to the NFL where he served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. He then went back to the college level for several years, serving as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins before leaving that position to coordinate Ohio State’s offense.

The Raiders did not announce who will replace Kelly as the team’s interim offensive coordinator for the remainder of this season.

We’ll have to see what’s next for Kelly and the Raiders as they both go their separate ways.
